Critiques: How (and why) to accept criticism|Even if writing is just a hobby undertaken for the sheer fun of it, an amateur can still polish their skills to the same level as someone who is publishing professionally. Amateurs are unpaid for their creative effort, but that doesn't necesasrily mean they are lesser writers. Standards of excellence are obtainable for writers who are willing to work for them, and one way to develop as a writer is to learn how to take criticism. There's a limit to how well you can judge your own work and recognize your strengths and weaknesses. Eventually you will need a more objective eye to offer a different perspective on your story... and you may not like everything you hear. And yet it is essential that you listen and learn especially when you face comments that hurt. Praise feels good, but all it does is tell you what you're doing right. In order to write a better story next time, you need to correct what you're doing wrong this time around. |
